John Wick (Keanu Reeves) has led an idyllic life in the last few years:  He has Helen (Bridget Moynahan), his beautiful wife, enough money so he doesn’t have to work, a gorgeous home in the suburbs outside New York City and a peace of mind many of us lack.  Sadly, there’s a death sentence hanging over his happiness as Helen has an incurable disease that takes her life.  John is devastated and goes through the wake after her burial in a haze.  After everyone has left, a delivery person rings John’s doorbell.

My father served in the army in Europe during World War II.  His job was to be a mechanic, fixing everything from jeeps to tanks to Howitzers.  He didn’t talk much about what he did or saw during his service and we somehow knew not to push it.  Once, after a few beers on a Saturday night, dad started talking about being sent to the Battle of the Bulge to repair a tank or artillery gun.  He’d never been that close to the real fighting during his time overseas and he admitted he was scared to death the whole time but he made it back unharmed.

One of my earliest memories involving vampires involves the soap opera “Dark Shadows” and its leading man, the vampire Barnabas Collins.  “Dark Shadows” was one of the oddest soap operas in television history as it told the ongoing story of a family cursed by vampires, witches, werewolves and ghosts.  As a child of six or seven, it was mesmerizing to see the various traps and enemies Barnabas would need to escape.  The most dangerous was the witch who made him a vampire, Angelique.

Colin (Idris Elba) killed a man in a bar fight and was convicted of manslaughter.  After serving five years, he’s up for parole; however, he’s also a suspect in the murder of five young women.  Prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to try Colin for the five murders so they took the one conviction they knew they could win to get him off the streets.  One of the parole board members, Dr. Ross (Wilbur Fitzgerald), knows Colin is a suspect and states he believes Colin is a narcissist who becomes violent when he doesn’t get his way with women.
