As a child, Milo (Kit Harington) witnessed the butchering of his parents and his entire Celtic village at the hands of a Roman general named Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland) and his troops led by Strigana (Paz Vega).  Pretending to be dead, Milo was dumped in a pile of bodies.  He waited for the Romans to leave before wandering the countryside as five year old orphan.  Sleeping under a tree, Milo is discovered by a merchant’s caravan and is sold into slavery.

It is 2028 and all around the world, the law enforcement robots of Omnicorp, run by Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton), are maintaining order in several countries, except the United States where the publicly popular Dreyfus Act, initiated by Senator Dreyfus (Zach Grenier), prohibits their use.  Sellars and his management team brainstorm on a way to make the American public more receptive to robot police.  Their plan is to put a man inside the machine.

This week, I saw two films.  Neither of them is an important, challenging drama with earth shattering things to say; however, both provide lots of entertainment in their own ways.

Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser (Christian Bale and Amy Adams) are two damaged souls who, together, make one whole person.  They are con artists running a fairly successful racket promising desperate people who can’t get money through the bank loans that cost $5000 in upfront fees.  No loans are ever given and the pair is happy working together, raking in money and living a comfortable life.

Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a young stock broker looking for a new gig after his first job ended following the Black Monday crash of 1987.  Desperate to get back to the luxury lifestyle he got a small taste of before; Belfort begins selling penny stocks from a storefront operation at a strip mall.  Employing the same techniques for penny stocks that he used for the blue chips, Belfort soon begins raking in big money from clients like mailmen, garbage men, teachers and factory workers.

Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is going through the final stages of a divorce from his wife Catherine (Rooney Mara).  He’s depressed and seems to be pouring all his feeling out at his job writing personal letters for people who apparently lack the ability to express themselves on paper.  He’s very good at his job and the office receptionist Paul (Chris Pratt) is one of his biggest fans.  Despite work going well, Theodore is painfully unhappy and depressed.

A four-man Navy Seal team of Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Matt Axelson (Ben Foster) and Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) is sent into a mountainous region of Afghanistan to identify the location of high-ranking Taliban leader Ahmad Shah (Yusef Azami).  They are to verify his identity and inform their superiors by radio so a strike team can be sent in to capture and kill Shah.  Dietz is in charge of communications and warns the mountainous terrain could be a problem.  Once Shah is identified Dietz tries to call in but cannot.

Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) has just graduated from high school in Oxnard, California.  He and his best friend Hector (Jorge Diaz) are looking forward to a carefree summer.  At the building where Jesse lives, an odd woman named Anna (Gloria Sandoval) lives in the apartment directly below Jesse’s family.  Jesse frequently hears odd noises coming from Anna’s and she keeps her windows covered in newspaper.  One night, Anna is murdered.

Found in the forest as a preteen and raised as a servant, Kai (Keanu Reeves) is a mystery to the household he serves in Feudal Japan.  Lord Asano (Min Tanaka) took pity on Kai but others in his service hate and fear him, thinking he’s a demon.  Many years later, Lord Asano is hosting the leaders of all the territories in Japan for a tournament involving their samurai.  Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) is one of the leaders bringing his champion to compete.
